As India gears up to bid for the 2036 Olympics, there’s real excitement about the possibility of hosting this prestigious event. Nita Ambani, the Founder-Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, has expressed her support for the bid, emphasising India’s potential to conduct the “greenest Olympics ever.”

Nita Ambani backs India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics

At the Harvard University’s Annual India Conference in Boston, Ambani shared her heartfelt belief that India deserves to host the Olympics sooner rather than later. She pointed out the country’s impressive economic growth, making a case for why now is the perfect time for India to host the marquee sporting event.

“I believe that India must have the Olympics. We are going to be the third-largest economy in the world. If you look at the 10 largest economies of the world, nine countries have hosted the Olympics, but only India has not. So I find that really odd. We would wish to see the Olympics being hosted in our country. It will be our pride to host that. So that is the reason, I think the Prime Minister also mentioned that India will bid for the 2036 Olympics,” Nita Ambani said.

Ambani, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), shared India’s plan to host a sustainable Olympics. She claimed that if India gets to host the 2026 edition, it will be the “greenest Olympics ever.”

“I think we are planning to host a sustainable Olympics where we are planning to refurbish and reuse our existing stadiums and existing campuses. If we bid for it and get it, I assure you that we’ll be the greenest Olympics ever…I think India is at the right time now to host the Olympics,” she added.

During the inauguration of the 2025 National Games, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics. He expressed his belief that the government is fully dedicated to securing the hosting rights. PM Modi had first declared India’s interest in bidding for the 2036 Olympics during an IOC Session held in Mumbai in 2023.
