The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has said that farmers in Budalur block in Thanjavur district would resort to agitation if their demands were not met before the commencement of next paddy cultivation season.
Participating in the Revenue Divisional-level farmers grievance meeting held at the office of the Thanjavur Revenue Division Officer here on Friday, association’s district secretary N.V. Kannan pointed out that farmers in Budalur block took up cultivation under stressful environment in recent times as their plea for timely rejuvenation and maintenance of Upper Kattalai Mettu Kalvai and Uyyakondan Extension Channel were not even considered by the officials concerned.
Like rubbing salt into the wound, he said the Budalur block farmers, who suffered crop loss due to the vagaries of nature, were not compensated even though the officials conducted an assessment. They had not received the crop insurance compensation either, he added and resented that the announcements regarding the uplift of farmers and agriculture remained on paper.
