Sri Sathya Sai district police on Tuesday arrested two persons for allegedly killing a YSRCP activist, Majjiga Lingamaiah, at Papireddypalle in Ramagiri mandal of the district, on Monday. The killing raised a political furore, with the YSRCP alleging it as a politically motivated one.
According to Dharmavaram Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Hemant Kumar, Mr. Lingamaiah’s son Manohar was going to his in-law’s house when the accused, Dharmavarapu Adarsh and Dharmavarapu Manoj alias Manoj Naidu, allegedly made derogatory comments against Manohar. Mr. Manohar informed the same to his father over phone and the latter reprimanded them about their behaviour.
Later, Adarsh and Manoj went to Lingamaiah’s house and attacked him with sticks. Mr. Lingamaiah suffered an injury on his head and was admitted to a private hospital at Anantapur, where he succumbed to injuries. Ramagiri police registered a case and have arrested the accused on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, YSRP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy assured full support to the family of Lingamaiah. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy called the family members of the deceased over phone to express his condolences and said that he would gather details about the tragic incident.
Lingamaiah’s other two sons, Srinivasulu and Murali, told Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy that their father was attacked and killed by approximately 20 TDP supporters on Ugadi, while returning from a temple. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy assured the family that the party would stand by them and provide all necessary assistance. He urged them to not lose hope and promised to personally visit them the next week.
Meanwhile, the family raised concerns about their safety, and said that the local Sub-Inspector (SI) was acting in a biased manner and creating an atmosphere of fear. In response, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy assured them that the party’s district leaders and legal cell would be alerted to ensure their protection.
