Tendering of shops at the new modern market at Kaloor set up by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will get under way shortly.
Of the total 82 shops, 15 will be allotted to traders who operated before the market renovation, while 27 will be reserved for rehabilitating traders from the old market near Deshabhimani Junction.
The remaining 40 shops, the 2,000-sq. ft restaurant space on the first floor, and the 1,000-sq. ft supermarket area will be tendered by the first week of May. Of the shops, 13 will be reserved for the vegetarian section, 14 for meat, nine for fish, and eight for chicken. The shops will be tendered in batches—14 along the central courtyard, eight opening to the outside, and 16 on the first floor.
The 40,000-sq. ft modern, air-conditioned, two-storey building alongside Manapattyparambu at Kaloor has been developed with the support of Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML). Around 6,000 sq. ft have been reserved for meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, and provisions. Each section will have an open stall area and will be accessible from both the market courtyard and the outside. Lifts are also available.
The market is spread over around 13 acres and has parking facilities for nearly 60 cars. Additional parking space is available on demand on adjacent land owned by the GCDA at Manapattyparambu. The market will be accessible from Banerjee Road, Kaloor metro station, Manapattyparambu, and Shastha Temple Road.
The GCDA is also developing a plant for treating waste at source in the market. The effluent treatment plant will have the capacity to treat 50 kilolitres of wastewater per day. A solid waste treatment plant is also on the anvil. The facilities will be set up using the latest technology, eliminating any potential nuisance to residents in the neighbourhood. Until the plant becomes operational, waste from the market will be taken to the Corporation’s waste treatment facility at Brahmapuram, according to a release issued by the GCDA.
A rainwater harvesting system, firefighting facilities, service lifts, a firefighting water tank, toilets, electrical room, and extensive drainage infrastructure have also been set up at the market.
