Six prison staff at the Gudalur sub-jail were suspended after they allegedly physically assaulted an under-trial lodged at the prison in the Nilgiris.

Sources said that the victim of the attack, identified as Nizamudeen, a resident of Padanthorai in Gudalur, accused of selling narcotic substances in Gudalur, was lodged in the prison when he was attacked by five prison staff recently, leading to him sustaining injuries. Sources said that Nizamudeen’s family approached the judiciary and the district administration seeking their intervention as they feared for his safety.

Following this, an inquiry, which included officials from the Revenue Department and a judge from the Gudalur court, was conducted at the prison, leading to the suspension of six persons, identified as Gangadharan, the Gudalur sub-jail’s deputy superintendent, chief warden, Mazharvannan and warders, Chinnasamy, Dinesh Babu, Arun and Gobi.

On Thursday, top officials from the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department are said to have conducted an inspection of the Gudalur sub-jail, where they are said to have spoken to inmates about the conditions at the prison and their treatment there. Despite attempts to contact K. Jayabharathi, DIG of Prisons (West Zone) by phone, she was unavailable for comment about the incident.

Nizamudeen was brought to the Udhagamandalam Medical College and Hospital for treatment on Thursday.
