BJP leader and former Karimnagar Mayor Y. Sunil Rao, on Friday, sought a detailed probe into the alleged financial irregularities and inferior quality of works on the Manair River Front Development Project at Lower Manair Dam (LMD) in Karimnagar.
Speaking to the media after visiting the work site near LMD, along with a host of local BJP leaders, he said that the previous BRS government accorded administrative approval of ₹310.46 crore and ₹234.72 crore for the first and second phases of the project in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
He alleged that faulty designs of the various components of the project and substandard work on protection walls on both flanks of Manair river below the LMD posed a threat to the Manair riverbed ecosystem.
He further alleged that bills worth ₹220 crore were paid to contractors despite the substandard works draining the State exchequer. He blamed ‘lack of supervision’ by the officials concerned for the ‘poor quality of works.’
A foreign tour was organised by the project proponents on the pretext of a study tour for setting up a world-class water fountain at the riverfront in the past, he pointed out.
He said, “A detailed probe should be ordered into the irregularities in the river front development project and also the inferior quality of work on the cable bridge constructed across the Manair river at ₹224 crore. I request Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar to ensure a thorough inquiry into the fiasco.”
