The seventh edition of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2024 grand finale will be held at the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi, along with 50 other venues across the country, on Wednesday.

VTU has been selected as one of the 51 nodal centres across the country. It will have teams that will face the Ministry of Law and Justice’s Problem Statements.

“This marks a significant milestone for VTU in fostering innovation and real-world problem-solving among students. As many as 25 teams across India will be participating in this grand finale,” VTU Special Officer Harish Bendigeri has said in a release.

The problem statements that students will work on include “Learning the Constitution in a Simpler Manner: Institutional Perspective” and “Learning the Constitution in a Simpler Manner: Citizen Perspective”, “Developing an AI-based Interactive Chatbot or Virtual Assistant for the Department of Justice Website”, “AI-Driven Research Engine for Commercial Courts and Bail Reckoner,” the release said.

The challenges identified this year will be to cover 17 major themes linked to sectors of national importance, including Healthcare, Supply Chain and Logistics, Smart Technologies, Heritage and Culture, Sustainability, Education and Skill Development, Water, Agriculture and Food, Emerging Technologies and Disaster Management.

Like the past editions, student teams will work on either the problem statements given by the Ministries/Departments/Industries or submit their idea in the Student Innovation Category against any of the 17 themes.

For SIH 2024, more than 250 problem statements have been submitted by 54 Ministries, Departments, State governments, PSUs and Industries.

More than 86,000 teams participated in the SIH 2024 at the institute level and 49,000 student teams (each consisting of six students and two mentors) have been recommended by these institutes for the national-level round.

The SIH Grand Finale also serves as a platform for open interaction between officials from different Ministries/government departments and students and teachers from educational institutes, a unique and encouraging aspect of the event.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will virtually inaugurate the event across the country at the same time.

Principal District and Sessions Judge, Belagavi, T.N. Inavally will inaugurate the event and VTU Vice-Chancellor Vidyashankar S. will be present.

SIH is a flagship event of the Union Ministry of Education. It was started in 2017.
