Roommates of minor girl might have assisted her during delivery in hostel: Police

The Eluru Two Town police investigating the case of a ‘minor girl giving birth to a baby in the hostel toilet’ suspect that a few roommates or the staff staying in the missionary institution might have assisted the girl in delivering the baby in the hostel.

The police reportedly took a few suspects into custody on Tuesday.

A 17-year-old girl, who was pursuing intermediate second year and was staying in the hostel run by a missionary organisation, delivered a female baby in the wee hours of December 8 in Eluru.

The mother reportedly threw the infant from the hostel building into the compound of the adjacent house. Watchman of the house who noticed the dead infant alerted the police by calling over ‘Dial 112’.

Eluru Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) D. Sravan Kumar and Two Town CI Y.V. Ramana were investigating the case under the supervision of Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore.

“We suspect that the minor girl gave birth to the female infant with the help of her friends. During investigation, staff of the missionary institution said that eight students were staying in the hostel room,” an investigation officer said.

“When asked, the minor girl said she gave birth to the baby in the hostel toilet without anybody’s help. Later, the infant was thrown from a height,” said a police officer who is investigating the case.

“Police are investigating on who assisted the minor girl and how the institute and the college staff failed to identify the pregnant girl, why the roommates kept the issue confidential, who threw the baby from the hostel building, the reason for the death of the infant and whether the inmates of the hostel planned to hush up the incident after the delivery,” a police officer said.

Investigation officers said the management and other staff of the missionary organisation were maintaining silence on the minor delivering the baby in the hostel toilet.

“There were no CCTVs at the missionary institution where the incident occurred. The body of the infant was found on the cement floor beside the hostel. We will question the staff of the organisation,” Mr. Pratap Shiva Kishore told The Hindu on Tuesday.

“Three teams have been formed to probe the case. The health condition of the mother is stable and she is recovering,” the SP said.
