In a lighter vein, the ever-exuberant Kajol recently revealed that the only time she was advised to stay calm was when she was carrying her firstborn daughter, Nysa. “My kids have made me go silent. I always say that the biggest lesson I learnt was from my daughter as soon as I got pregnant with her. My doctor told me, ‘No, your blood pressure should not be more than this’. Agar chalogi bhi na…yeh mat karna…don’t even raise your voice this much (Even if you walk, avoid this…),” reflected Kajol, 51.
Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra on a YouTube podcast, Sarzameen actor added, “Suddenly, I was like…I have to pay attention….I can’t raise my voice too much…mujhe yeh nahi karna chahiye, woh nahi karna chahiye (I should not do this or that)…so I got the lesson of patience and keeping my mouth shut from her.”
Taking a cue from her candid confession, let’s explore whether there is a connection between blood pressure and a loud voice.
Dr Shweta Wazir, senior consultant, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Gurgoan, said raising your voice or shouting during pregnancy does not directly harm the baby, but frequent anger or stress can affect your body. “When you shout or talk loudly, your heart rate and blood pressure may rise for a short time. If this happens often, it can lead to stress, disturbed sleep, headaches, or even higher blood pressure levels, which are not healthy during pregnancy,” said Dr Wazir.
Babies are highly sensitive to their mother’s emotional state, so maintaining calmness is beneficial for both mother and child. According to Dr Wazir, it is better to ensure your peace of mind and avoid stressing unnecessarily. “However, it is also natural to sometimes feel frustrated or emotional during pregnancy because of hormonal changes and physical discomfort. One or two episodes of raising your voice are unlikely to cause serious harm, but it is advisable to stay calm and composed,” said Dr Wazir.

Moreover, pay attention to your overall lifestyle, mental health, and stress management throughout pregnancy.
“It is helpful to practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, light walking, listening to music, or talking to a trusted person. Keeping a calm environment supports your well-being and helps the baby grow healthily and peacefully. So, pregnant women should be extra cautious and focus on their well-being,” said Dr Wazir.
