Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar lays stress on preserving the mother tongue

Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav speaking at the 6th World Telugu Writers’ Mahasabhalu, in Vijayawada on Sunday.

Delegates continued to discuss measures to be taken to promote Telugu language on the second day of the 6th World Telugu Writers’ Mahasabhalu at KBN College in Vijayawada on December 29, 2024 (Sunday).

Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Y. Satya Kumar Yadav attended as the chief guest of the programme. Several political leaders gathered as the topic was the role of politicians in preservation of Telugu language.

In his address, Mr. Satya Kumar pointed out that language was not just a medium to communicate but also a bridge that would bring people of different communities together.

“When you try to obliterate a language, the culture and traditions associated with it get obliterated too. Hence, it is important to preserve the mother tongue,” the Minister said, adding that people should introduce their children to literature in Telugu early on.

He said, while the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Telugu, earlier in Mysuru, came to Andhra Pradesh (Nellore) after a long delay in 2020, the previous government did little to provide a temporary building for the same.

“For four years, the institution remained without any support from the YSRCP government. The funds came from former Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s trust,” the Minister said, promising that the institute would soon have a permanent building at Venkatachalam in Nellore.

He said the TDP-led NDA government in the State was focussing on creating a society of youngsters who were not just knowledge practitioners but also knowledge producers. The Minister said he would discuss with the Ministers about the possibility of bringing out the G.O.s in Telugu.

‘Lead by example’

Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary K. Ramakrishna said all government officers should lead by example by sending their children to government schools and encouraging them to learn Telugu.

“We, as political leaders, are doing our bit by conversing and writing in Telugu, but we should also think about how to keep the legacy for the future generations,” he said.

Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, who attended the evening session, promised to act as a bridge between the Telugu writers’ community and the government, and bring their issues to the notice of the Chief Minister.

Leaders from Telugu Desam Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, and MLC P. Ashok Babu took part in the conference.
