Raichur: Saraswati, 24, passed away at Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Sunday, three days after delivering her baby.
The deceased, who hailed from Haddinal in Devdurg taluk, underwent a C-section at RIMS on January 2 to deliver her fourth child, a son. Post-delivery, she was admitted to the ICU for hypertension treatment. According to Dr Bhaskar, medical superintendent at RIMS, she did not respond to treatment and succumbed on Sunday.
The district has witnessed concerning numbers of maternal deaths. Official records show deaths of 12 pregnant/lactating women in the past three months, with RIMS recording five cases. Dr Shailendra Beldale, leading the BJP fact-finding team, attributed these maternal deaths to govt negligence.
During his visit to the Sindhanur govt hospital on Monday, following discussions with medical officers, he remarked, “Three months prior, we witnessed a troubling series of fatalities involving four lactating mothers and several children within a single month, and the govt bears responsibility for this situation.”
Dr Basavaraj Kyavatar, BJP state core committee member, noted similarities between deaths in Ballari and Sindhanur govt hospitals. He suggested that Ringer’s lactate (RL) solution injections administered to pregnant women might be responsible, calling for an immediate investigation by higher authorities.
Beldale expressed concern over the statements made by taluk health officer Dr Ayyanagouda and chief medical officer Dr Nagaraj Katwa, asserting that it is unacceptable to claim that lactating mothers and children succumbed to illnesses. He highlighted the lack of a comprehensive report even two months after the incident, labelling the situation as a clear indication of irresponsibility.
Manjula, the president of BJP mahila morcha, stated that these fatalities resulted from inadequate medical care. She reports that 43 children lost their lives over the past year. It is crucial for the govt to take this issue seriously and to conduct a high-level inquiry into the matter.
The team included former MP K Virupakshappa, K Kariappa, Madhwaraj, the medical cell’s Dr Lakshman, and many other members.
