LIFE Mission an unparalleled project, says Minister

The State government’s LIFE Mission is an unparalleled project, said Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh here on Thursday. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone of the Lions Life Village project at Kadakkal where Lions International District 318 A will construct houses. Twenty-five houses will be built on a one-acre plot provided by businessman Abdullah as part of ‘Manassodithiri Mannu’, a campaign launched to provide land to the landless. The Minister said that 4,24,800 houses had been completed under the LIFE Mission in the State while construction of 1,14,000 houses was under way.

“LIFE Mission will be recorded in history as the largest housing project undertaken in India. The government is contributing ₹4 lakh per house and no other State is offering even half of that. Kerala has spent ₹17,961 crore on this project, while the Union government’s contribution is a mere ₹2,421 crore. Organisations such as Lions Club and individuals have also contributed to the project. Such support is fuelled by the trust that the government will deliver on its promises efficiently and on time,” he said.

He added that the Chittilappilly Foundation has provided ₹25 crore to purchase land for 1,000 landless people. “The timely assurance of land prompted the foundation to commit to providing land for another 1,000 people. Organisations and collectives support such initiatives when they believe that aid reaches those in need of it. By 2026, around 6.5 lakh houses will be completed under the LIFE Mission,” said the Minister.

The houses will have two bedrooms, a hall, and a kitchen, covering an area of 454 sq ft. A Lions amenity centre will also be built to provide continued services to the residents. The aim is to complete the construction of these houses by June 30, 2025, and hand them over to 25 LIFE beneficiaries in the panchayat.
