Large participation from Mysuru planned for ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhan’ convention in Belagavi

The Mysuru district Congress has planned a massive attendance to the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhan’ public convention to be held in Belagavi on January 28.

This was decided at a meeting convened here on Wednesday and the district in charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa said that at least 100 to 150 members from each Assembly segment should take part in it. Addressing the Congress workers and office hearers, Mr. Mahadevappa said the responsibility to ensure such numbers vests with present and former MLAs and other block level leaders.

Mr. Mahadevappa said the convention was being held to save the Constitution and secularism which, he said, was under attack by the BJP and accused it of fomenting communalism. It was imperative to vow, to fight and save the Constitution, and there was a need for another movement on the lines of freedom struggle, he added.

The Minister said it was only the Congress which gave credence and importance to constitutional values of secularism, etc., while other parties that came to power, were indifferent to it. The concept of secularism has been weakened ever since the BJP came to power and it has polarised the society on caste and religious lines, said Mr. Mahadevappa.

Hence it was important to reiterate the resolve to spread the values enshrined in the Constitution apart from the messages of Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar, he added.

The Constitution belonged to 140 crore people of India and was not a document restricted to the Dalits and yet the disparaging  statements of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Parliament is a clear indication that the BJP was trying to confine B.R. Ambedkar to Dalits, said Mr. Mahadevappa.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president Tanveer Sait said, the remarks of Mr. Shah was an affront and insult to every Indian. He said it was the Congress which fought for freedom and valued secular values and those oblivious of it, were hoping from one party to another in quest for power. He said there was social disparity and Congress was committed to reduce it and pointed out that 1% of the population owned 15% of the country’s wealth while the poor were haunted by the spectre of unemployment.

Mr. Sait said it was important to highlight the “anti-constitution” mindset of the BJP and take it to the people, he added.

Congress Bhavan

Mr. Sait said Rahul Gandhi will lay the foundation for Congress Bhavan in Bengaluru next month and it has been decided to take up the construction of 100 Congress bhavans in the State on the same day, including in Mysuru.
