Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil has directed the officers of the Social Welfare, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare departments to provide basic infrastructure to students residing in hostels run by them in Raichur district.

He was chairing a Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting to review progress of work in Raichur on Friday.

Dr. Patil, who is also the district in-charge Minister, said that the State government is aiming at creating good educational atmosphere in hostels being run by respective departments. It is ready to release grants for infrastructure.

“Officers of the departments concerned should ensure that all basic infrastructure is provided to students,” he added.

He further said that officers should take immediate steps and identify available CA sites to construct hostels. In case of shortage of sites, they should discuss it with the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat and take further steps for construction of hostel buildings.

District and taluk officers have to supervise and review the supply of foodgrains to hostels on the fifth of every calendar month, he said. “The CEO should visit hostels and inspect their condition, food supply to students and infrastructure and also appoint nodal officers wherever required and seek reports from them regularly,” the Minister said.

The district is yet to overcome its poor performance in SSLC and PU results. The officers should consider it as the most serious and put in efforts to improve the results, Dr. Patil said when the issue came up during the meeting.

He added that wardens and nodal officers will be held responsible if results are not improved.

MLAs Basanagouda Turvihal, Basanagouda Daddal, Hampanagouda Badarli and MLC V. Vasantkumar raised the issue of proper utilisation of grants meant for the development of hostels, proper maintenance of hostels and quality of foodgrains supplied and suggested that the authorities not issue tenders to a single agency every time.

Deodurg MLA Karemma G. Naik urged the Minister to send teachers who have been deputed to the Social Welfare Department back to their mother department as the Education Department is facing an acute teacher shortage in the constituency.

Manvi MLA Hampayya Naik said that government buildings are in need of attention as they are in a dilapidated condition due to lack of maintenance.

Somashekhar Patil, Minakshi Ramaswamy, Deputy Commissioner Nitish K., CEO Rahul Pandwe, Superintendent of Police M. Puttamadaiah and others were present.
