Experts have warned of an imminent risk of landslides in four hills across the district—Bevinche, Thekkil, Veeramalakkunnu, and Mattali—due to unscientific soil extraction for national highway work.

A report by a team of geologists appointed by the State Disaster Management Authority has termed the ongoing remedial measures inadequate.

The investigation, led by Geological Survey of India officials S.G. Ahira and A. Ramesh Kumar, was initiated following reports from village officers. Their findings reveal that mandated slope guidelines for soil extraction were violated, leading to the removal of laterite layers and destabilising the terrain.

Veeramalakkunnu has already experienced landslides during heavy rains, with visible cracks and gaps resembling ‘wounds’ across the landscape.

According to the report, these cracks could intensify landslide risk as rainwater or groundwater flows forcefully through them. The geologists recommend strengthening the surface based on soil type and slope conditions while implementing water drainage systems to prevent water accumulation. It was pointed out that horizontal drainages on most hills were obstructed and the report suggests efficient subsurface drains and alternative drainage pipe design for implementation.

While some areas have been covered with concrete, the absence of drainage holes has created hazardous conditions. Cracked concrete layers and collapsed soil in many locations further exacerbate the problem.

The report mooted detailed studies based on site conditions, slope angles, overburden thickness, rock type and geological and geotechnical inputs.

The Mining and Geology department had earlier imposed a fine of ₹1.75 crore on the company which was given the contract for the construction of the NH and was responsible for soil extraction in Veeramalakkunnu. The same company is handling construction activities at the other three sites flagged in the report.
