‘I felt safe with Vikramditya Motwane leading the project; not agenda driven…’ – Firstpost

Sunil Gupta (Zahan Kapoor) plays the role of a jailer and the main protagonist of the show.  Netflix’s Black Warrant highlights the power play and politics that rule supreme in the prison not only among the officers in charge, but also among the prisoners. The series shows the power fight among the three gangs in the jail for survival.

In an earlier interview with Vikramaditya Motwane for Black Warrant, Motawani had mentioned that the only difference of opinion Satyanshu Singh and he ever had was, “I felt that the whole book should be done in one season and he wanted to slow it down and make it into a series.”

However, making
Black Warrant into a series was indeed a bright idea because Black Warrant dealt with many case studies. Explaining why he wanted it to be made into a series, Satyanshu Singh said, “When it comes to a feature film, it is about the plot of the story. The beginning, the middle and the end of it. When it comes to a series, it’s a character and the world. Any good series is basically a deep dive into the world. I thought that reading a small book can teach philosophy with so many wonderful details. If you slow it down, we could cover day-to-day lives of these jailers and inmates. If you are making a series like this, it has to be a definitive series on prisons. We need to go deep into this world is what I felt.”

Talking about the challenges faced while putting it on paper and then on the screen and the responsibilities that went behind it since it’s a real life story, Satyanshu added, “I felt safe with
Vikram leading the project. I know he’s a sensitive and sensible human being and has a world view I find myself agreeing with. We were not serving any agenda but a drama so that also helped. This was a humanist lens. That gave us confidence that we would do justice to it.”
