Tom Cruise is all set to play our beloved IMF Agent, Ethan Hunt in the eighth and final part of the Mission: Impossible franchise titled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Since its inception in 1996, the spy-actioner franchise has garnered global popularity for its impeccable and high-octane stunts and stylish action sequences.
With The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise is expected to give audiences a fitting conclusion to the franchise. So, does he fulfil the sky-high expectations of the cinegoers? Let’s find out…
The Final Reckoning continues from its previous part of the MI franchise,
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
. To be more precise, from the second half of the Dead Reckoning. Ethan is now on a maverick mission to save the world against an AI brain called ’the Entity’, who wishes to be anti-God or an evil ruler of the world as he is undermining the truth with lies and deepfakes across the globe and making sure to trigger fights between nuclear nations.
As the Entity wants the annihilation of the human race from the planet, Ethan needs to stop it through a ‘cruciform key,’ (which he found in Dead Reckoning) and apply it to the ‘Podkova’ device, which is at a wrecked Russian sub. The amalgamation of both will result in a ‘poison pill,’ which will deactivate or rather kill the Entity.
Ethan is accompanied by his capable and smart team, including Grace (Hayley Atwell), Luther (Ving Rhames), and Benji (Simon Pegg). They are soon joined by Paris (Pom Klementieff) and Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis).
Well, the touted last mission for Hunt, which takes a slow or melodramatic start with a built-up of what to expect, picks from the second half and takes you to an immersive action-adventure experience. The MI franchise has always been known for its unbelievable and breathtaking stunts and with the last part, Tom has gone all out to make sure audiences are glued to their seats and enjoy every second of his presence on the big screen.
While The Final Reckoning has several cinematic moments, two crucial sequences – Ethan finding the device in the wrecked Russian submarine and the climax where the fight between the two vintage biplanes flying at 10,000 feet, turn out to be the biggest highlights with SFX adding the punch and amplifies the impact. In the movie, the makers showed a flashback montage of the previous 7 parts of M:I and undoubtedly it took me on a nostalgic ride with fans cheering and hooting after watching the young Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt.
Christopher McQuarrie has once again hit the ball out of the park with his impeccable direction and compelling storytelling. Fraser Taggart also deserves brownie points for his stylish camera work, which transforms cinegoers into the world of Ethan Hunt.
Talking about the performances, it’s a Tom Cruise show and right from his finesse in performing every stunt to his expressive emotions, the charismatic actor has ruled the screen with his charm. Esai Morales, who reprises as the antagonist Gabriel is good but has very little screen time to show his acting mettle. On the other hand, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff and Greg Tarzan Davis have played their role to the T.
On the whole, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is an epic finale and deserves to be watched on the big screen, especially in IMAX.
