The police suspect the involvement of two persons in the case. “The investigation revealed that it was an attempted burglary. One of the accused, who has been identified through CCTV footage, entered the house using a fire escape,” said Dixit Gedam, Zone 9 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). The police dismissed any Bishnoi gang connection to the case.

After questioning the housekeepers and staff at Mr. Khan’s residence at the Satguru Sharan building, where the actor stays with his wife Kareena Kapoor, the police suspect that the attacker is known to one of the housekeepers. He did not break into the house nor make a forced entry, a police official said.

According to the Mumbai Police, the intruder entered Mr. Khan’s flat on the 12th floor around 2:30 a.m. When he entered the bedroom of Mr. Khan’s youngest son Jehangir, his house help raised an alarm, following which the actor intervened. The intruder attacked Mr. Khan with a knife. Their house help was also injured. CCTV visuals show the intruder escaping from the building through a staircase. Before the assault, the intruder reportedly demanded ₹1 crore from the house help who first saw him.

After the attack, Mr. Khan’s son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, rushed him to the Lilavati hospital in an autorickshaw around 3:30 a.m. Mr. Khan suffered six wounds, and a 2.5-inch piece of knife was lodged near his spine. “He sustained injuries to the thoracic spinal cord as the knife was lodged in his spine. Surgery was performed to remove the knife and also stop the leaking spinal fluid. Two other deep wounds on his left hand and neck were repaired by the plastic surgery team. He is stable now and recovering,” said Dr. Nitin Dange, consultant neurosurgeon. Cardiologist Dr. Shrinivas Gudva monitored the entire surgery along with a team of doctors.

Chief operating officer (COO) of the Lilavati Hospital Dr. Niraj Uttamani said Mr. Khan would be in the ICU for a day, and discharged in a day or two.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s team released a statement assuring well-wishers and supporters of the family’s safety. “There was an attempted burglary at Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s residence last night. Saif had an injury on his arm for which he is in hospital, undergoing a procedure. The rest of the family is doing fine. We request the media and fans to be patient and not speculate any further as the police are already doing their due investigations. Thank you all for your concern.”

The Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against the accused invoking sections 311 (robbery), 312 (attempts to commit robbery or dacoity while armed with a deadly weapon), 331(4) (house-trespass or housebreaking to commit any offence), 331(6), and 331(7) (grievous hurt during housebreaking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

‘Poor law and order‘

Meanwhile, the Opposition slammed the Mahayuti government for the “poor” law and order situation in Maharashtra. NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule called the incident “worrisome”.

While Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut highlighted the “deteriorating” state of law and order in the State, Worli legislator and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said: “Does anyone care about citizen safety at all? The intrusion and knife attack on Saif Ali Khan is shocking.”

“We are relieved to hear that he is stable and recovering, and we pray that tough times are over, and he bounces back to normalcy at the earliest. The fact that it happened, however, only highlights the absolute shambles law & order is in Maharashtra,” Mr. Thackeray posted on X.

Mr. Thackeray also referred to hit-and-run cases in the last three years, and the incidents in Beed (sarpanch murder) and Parbhani (custodial death) and said, “The government has been an absolute failure in curbing crime and maintaining law and order.”

Mr. Raut said: “Mr. Khan is a Padma Shri awardee, and a few days earlier he also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, no one is safe in the State.” Noting that 90% of the police force was with the politicians, he said there was no security for the common man.
