Eighty-one libraries, mostly small, have been given laptops, projectors, and sound systems to organise meetings, readersâ gatherings, and other events. The devices were provided under an initiative by the Ernakulam district panchayat.
District panchayat president Manoj Moothedan said that well-equipped libraries would help guide the youth on the right path and attract the new generation to libraries. He added that drawing the youth to libraries and cultivating the habit of reading was essential for the growth of society.
âThe libraries are being overhauled in the digital age to ensure they remain accessible and technologically up to date for ordinary people. This is one of the steps needed to strengthen the library culture. In the age of new technology, libraries must establish their own footing,â Mr. Moothedan said.
The distribution of new devices on Saturday (March 22, 2025) marked the first phase of an effort to equip all libraries in the district with modern technology for public use. The second phase is expected to be completed in April. Library council members and district panchayat vice president Elsie George were among those who attended the distribution event at the District Panchayat Hall, according to a communication issued here.
