The Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) police, who are investigating Bollywood actor Kadambari Jethwani’s case, produced IPS officer and former Intelligence Director-General P. Sitarama Anjaneyulu in court on Wednesday, which remanded him in judicial custody till May 7.
The police had arrested Mr. Anjaneyulu at his residence in Hyderabad on Tuesday and shifted him to the Vijayawada jail.
Mr. Anjaneyulu, who had earlier been suspended, was accused of being the key conspirator in foisting a false case against Ms. Jethwani, and arresting her and her family members.
Acting on the complaint lodged by Kukkala Vidyasagar, a native of Krishna district, the Vijayawada Commissionerate Police had booked a case against Ms. Jethwani and three of her family members on February 2, 2024. The Ibrahimpatnam police had arrested the actor and her parents from their house in Mumbai the same day. They were later shifted to Vijayawada by road and produced in court.
On September 13, 2024, based on the complaint lodged by Ms. Jethwani, the Ibrahimpatnam police had registered a case against Mr. Vidyasagar and five police officers.
In her complaint, Ms. Jethwani had alleged that Mr. Anjaneyulu, the then Vijayawada Police Commissioner, Kanthi Rana Tata, the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Vishal Gunni, the then West Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Hanumantha Rao, and the then Ibrahimpatnam Circle Inspector, M. Satyanarayana, with the help of the Juhu police in Mumbai, had arrested her and her family members “without giving arrest intimation.”
Arguing his case in the court, Mr. Anjaneyulu alleged that the police falsely implicated him in the case in which he had never been involved.
He alleged that the investigation officers had forcibly obtained confessional statements, including his name, from the other police officers. He said he had never heard of, or met Ms. Jethwani.
However, the prosecution officers said Mr. Anjaneyulu, being a top-level police officer, had colluded with Mr. Vidyasagar, and mounted pressure on the Vijayawada Commissionerate Police in registering a case against Ms. Jethwani and arresting her.
After hearing the arguments, the court granted judicial remand to Mr. Anjaneyulu till May 7, after which the police shifted him to the prison in Vijayawada.
