Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa said that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played a major role in drafting the Constitution, suitable for the diverse country that continues to hold it together.

He was speaking at the inauguration of Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary programme in Shivamogga on Monday.

Dr. Ambedkar spent his life for the upliftment of the downtrodden and fought to ensure that the deprived sections get justice. As head of the Constitution Drafting Committee, he gave a Constitution that upheld equality and took a stand against caste-based discrimination, the Minister said.

Besides drafting the Constitution, Mr. Madhu Bangarappa said, Dr. Ambedkar played a prominent role in shaping modern India as an economist and social thinker. The young generation should understand his contributions to humanity, he added.

Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra, legislators S.N. Channabasappa, Sharada Puryanaik, D.S. Arun, and officers were present. Mallikarjun Meti delivered a special lecture on Dr. Ambedkar.

Meanwhile, Minister for Cooperation K.N. Rajanna, who inaugurated Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary programme in Hassan, said people of all sections in the country got equal rights because of Dr. Ambedkar. He drafted the Constitution with the objective of providing justice to all the depressed classes.

The Minister said that the State government had taken up many programmes in reaching Dr. Ambedkar’s thoughts to people, particularly the younger generation.

The Social Welfare Department had popularised the Preamble of the Constitution by making students and people recite it at public programmes. This was an innovative idea to reach the basic principles of the Constitution to the larger public, Mr. Rajanna added.

Earlier in the day, a procession was held to mark the occasion. Elected representatives and officers participated in the procession that began at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
