A 16-year-old survivor of child sexual abuse has gifted a sketch along with a note of gratitude to an Assam police sub-inspector for helping her clear her Class 10 exams.

The girl said she grew up with the perception that all police personnel were bad, but she changed her mind after she came across Pratibha Bora of the Satgaon police station in Guwahati.

The sub-inspector helped the girl overcome her trauma and look at life ahead.

“If every police (man or woman) is like Pratibha Baideo (elder sister), children like me will get a lot of help,” the survivor wrote, adding that she found hope, strength, and inspiration from the woman in uniform to find purpose in life.

“I want to become a police officer like her,” the girl wrote.

“Feedback from children and their families is crucial in assessing the ground-level impact of the Assam Police Sishu Mitra Programme, allowing for a deeper understanding of its effectiveness and areas for improvement,” Miguel Das Queah, the founder of UTSAH Child Rights Organisation, said.

The 14-year-old UTSAH expands to Universal Team for Social Action and Help, which has been partnering with the Assam police along with UNICEF Assam to help children in distress.

The Sishu Mitra Programme was launched in 2019 to promote child-friendly policing in Assam.
