The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP) has urged the Madras High Court Chief Justice K.R. Shriram to ensure social diversity while recommending names of lawyers and judicial officers for being elevated as judges of the High Court this year.
Pointing out that the High Court had a working strength of 66 judges as against the sanctioned strength of 75 and that 12 judges were slated to retire from service this year, the council impressed upon the need for wider representation while filling up the vacancies.
The BCTNP insisted on considering the names of lawyers and judicial officers belonging to different sections of society, including minorities and women, based on their individual legal acumen, integrity and wisdom in order to ensure delivery of justice to people at large.
Copies of the representation had been marked to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna as well as the Supreme Court collegium members Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant. Copies had also been marked to Supreme Court consultee judges M.M. Sundresh and R. Mahadevan.
The representation had been signed by Bar Council of India (BCI) vice-chairman S. Prabakaran too apart from BCTNP chairman P.S. Amalraj and vice-chairman V. Karthikeyan.
