Police officials at the launch of Shakti teams in Chittoor on Sunday.
The Chittoor district police have launched six new Shakthi teams to effectively tackle crime against women, including domestic violence, harassment, and eve-teasing. Three teams will be stationed in the Chittoor sub-division, and one team each will be stationed in the Nagari, Palamaner, and Kuppam sub-divisions.
Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police V.N. Manikantha Chandolu said that seven police personnel, including two women, would be attached to each team led by an SI or an ASI rank officer.
The SP said the Shakthi teams would be deployed at public places such as bus stations, educational institutions, parks, and arterial junctions. The team members will be dressed in civil attire to detect and apprehend the offenders promptly, he said.
Responding to distress calls received on the Shakthi mobile app and the Dial 100 and 112 is given top priority. In addition to enforcement duties, the team will coordinate with the heads of educational institutions, voluntary organisations, and public groups to conduct awareness camps on safety measures for women and girls students. Special drives will also be launched to promote the widespread download of the Shakthi app on mobiles.
Additional SP Rajasekhar Raju underlined the importance of visible & vigilant policing and the involvement of the community to ensure foolproof safety of women. He called on the women to download the Shakthi app, saying that this would make the surveillance teams respond promptly to any emergency situation.
