The Circle Inspector and the Sub-Inspector of Police of Raichur West Police Station have been placed under suspension after a case was booked in connection with the death of a man in the city.
Raichur Superintendent of Police M. Puttamadiah on Wednesday placed Circle Inspector Nagaraj Meka and Sub-Inspector of Police Manjunath, attached to Raichur West Police Station, under suspension for violating the Karnataka Civil Services (Conduct) Rules 1966 and being involved in a criminal case registered in connection with the death of a 27-year-old man, Veeresh, in Raichur on Tuesday.
The Superintendent of Police’s action came after the two were booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023 and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 on Tuesday.
“The victim was subjected to electric shock, casteist abuse and assault and also was kicked by the accused in the police station during enquiry in a domestic issue between him and his wife Narasamma on March 30,” the FIR said, quoting complainant Jyothi, who is the sister of the victim.
The FIR further said that the victim died while being shifted to Raichur Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) on Tuesday for treatment of assault wounds.
The death of Veeresh (Earesh) caused an outrage among his family members.
Raichur MLA Shivaraj Patil and BJP workers joined them and staged a protest outside the Superintendent of Police’s office during the night demanding immediate action against the police officers and compensation to the victim’s family.
They withdrew the protest after the Superintendent of Police gave an assurance that he will initiate action.
The West Police registered a case against Nagaraj Meka, Manjunath and a police staff of the Women Police Station where the victim was initially brought for enquiry on March 30 before bringing him to West Police Station, under Sections 115(1), 118(3), 133, 352, 103(1) r/w 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023 and Sections 3(1)(r)(s) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ballari Range, B.S. Lokesh Kumar, on Wednesday, visited Raichur and discussed the incident with the Superintendent of Police.
Mr Lokesh Kumar, while addressing the media, said that both the officers have been suspended and the case will be handed over to the CID for investigation.
“The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Raichur has been assigned the enquiry until the case is handed over to the CID, as officers from the CID are expected to reach the district tomorrow,” he added.
