The Class VIII girl, G. Srilekha, who suffered injuries when a tree fell on her in the school compound three days back, succumbed to injuries on Sunday.
Srilekha was a student of the Zilla Parishad High School at Polkal in C Belagal Mandal of the district. On the occasion of National Science Day on Friday last (February 28), a science exhibition was held in the school compound. While the students were attending a meeting held on the occasion, a massive tree got uprooted and fell on the students.
While six of them suffered minor injuries, Srilekha suffered injury on her spinal cord and was shifted to the local PHC and from there to the Kurnool Government General Hospital (GGH).
District Collector P. Ranjit Basha said Srilekha died on Sunday (March 2) while undergoing treatment. “The girl was given the best possible medical care but she succumbed to injuries. It was an unfortunate incident, and the death of the girl was taken to the notice of the State government. An ex gratia of ₹5 lakh was announced to the family of the deceased girl,’‘ the Collector said.
The Collector asked the district Education Department officials to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
