Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Saturday that no one should be allowed to weaken the Constitution that provides the foundation for people’s rights.
Inaugurating a rights conference held as part of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham State conference here, the Chief Minister said the country was going through a sad state where people’s rights were being denied and innocents were being jailed.
Sangh Parivar squads were attacking independent organisations. Many had been killed or assaulted for adopting an different stance, he said. When independent media organisations were attacked, hardly any action was taken against the offenders.
‘Spreading animosity’
“The Sangh Parivar is trying to spread communal animosity across the country. They are now laying claim to the Ajmer dargah. Such demands are aimed at creating division. The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act of 1991 is a deterrent to such actions. The efforts to abrogate that Act should be resisted at all costs,” he said. Communal attacks had increased across the country after the BJP government came to power at the Centre.
Mr. Vijayan said that amendments to the Waqf Act were also being planned with evil intentions. He said some people were of the view that the Sangh Parivar moves were against Muslims only. Christians were being attacked in several parts of the country. The violence against Christians in Manipur could not be mitigated even after a year, he said, adding that minority communalism and majority communalism were equally dangerous.
