The CPI(M) wrote a letter to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu requesting him to take immediate steps to address the problems faced by Dalits, tribals, fishermen, and locals of Nelaturu village, Muthukur Mandal, Nellore district, who gave their lands for power plants.

In the letter dated Monday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said that it has been nearly 10 years since the Dalits, tribals, fishermen, and locals of Nelaturu village, Muthukur Mandal, Nellore district, gave their lands for the construction of power plants by Epigen Co. and Gayatri Power Plant.  During the public hearing back then, the management of the companies and government officials promised jobs for every household. However, only about 30% received contract jobs, which offer incomplete employment. The remaining 70% of the population were left without jobs, and due to the loss of agricultural land, they were facing many hardships, he said.

Similarly, the village, labelled as a “relocation village” has seen no development. Pollution has caused health problems for the residents, who are also struggling to access medical treatment for their ailments. Many homes have deteriorated, yet the people continue to live in them as they have no other choice.

As part of the relocation, houses are being built for the main village residents of Nelaturu, and plots have been allocated for Nelaturu Palem residents. However, no alternative has been provided for the Dalits and Tribals. Despite years of approaching the officials, there has been no resolution. Furthermore, for the past six years, ₹2,500 and 25 kg of rice have been provided every month to each household in Nelaturu Palem. Similar provisions should be extended to Dalits, tribals, and other backward classes.

“We request that the Dalits and Tribals be provided with livelihood opportunities until they are relocated from the village. I also urge you to provide employment, medical facilities, and housing for the Dalits and Tribals of Nelaturu village to ensure justice for them,” he said.
