PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Sunday urged the State Government to cancel the appointment of non-IAS officer, Ilangovan, as the Commissioner of Salem Corporation, one of the six large corporations in terms of revenue and land area in Tamil Nadu. He favoured appointed an IAS officer for the post.
In a statement, Dr. Anbumani said there are criticisms that the appointment has been made because he would ensure implementation of decisions without raising any questions even in the face of allegations.
“Appointing non-IAS officers as commissioners in charge of important corporations has become a trend in recent times. It is said the State government has plans to appoint non-IAS rank officers to corporations, which is shocking. Hosur corporation, which generates a revenue of Rs. 100 crore, doesn’t have a commissioner as of now after the commissioner in charge was transferred in January,” he said.
Dr. Anbumani claimed rules were bent to appoint Dr. Ilangovan as the Commissioner of Salem Corporation.
“For more than a month, a Commissioner was not appointed for Salem Corporation after its Commissioner was transferred to Theni district. On February 12, Dr. Ilangovan, a joint-director rank officer, was recommended for promotion. This requires compliance of extensive rules and regulations. However, due to lack of time, he was given a temporary promotion in a haste through a G.O. on March 6. On the same day, he was deputed as Commissioner of Salem corporation. The manner in which Dr. Ilangovan was given a promotion in such a short period of time raises many questions,” he said.
Adverting to another issue, he said the Tiruttani market, which is more than 50 years old and named after Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Kamaraj, is going to be renamed after Kalaignar (late M Karunanidhi) by the DMK government.
“The Congress party should have criticised this move first. Perhaps, they didn’t bother to raise their voice because they have almost become a part of DMK. PMK will not allow any attempt to rename the market named after Kamarajar to Kalaignar. PMK will organise protests if State Government doesn’t change its stance,” he said.
