With complaints of harassment by goons and employees of microfinance companies rising, some women in Haveri staged a unique protest on Thursday against such harassment by dropping copies of memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister along with their Mangalasutras in a post box.

The protest was staged in front of a post office in Haveri under the aegis of Ranebennur unit of a farmers organisation.

The protesting women said that harassment by representatives of microfinance companies has increased and their husbands are receiving threat calls.

They appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to save their husbands and Mangalasutra.

They said that microfinance companies disbursed loans to residents of Ranebennur and surrounding taluks but are charging hefty interest. Though they have promptly paid all their loan instalments, the company representatives are still asking them to pay more, they said.

They said that because of the increased harassment, men in their families are being forced to leave their native places and, in some cases, houses are being locked by the company staff. They appealed to Mr. Siddaramaiah to intervene and protect their families.
