The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is focussing its attention on the disappearance of a water body in Khanamet area of Serilingampally mandal.

Acting upon the complaints from local residents that the Edulakunta lake between Khanamet and Kukatpally has vanished, the enforcement agency with help from Survey of India, has started to determine the boundaries of the lake.

The lake had already been traced out through high resolution maps of the National Remote Sensing Centre, prompting Commissioner HYDRAA A.V.Ranganath to inspect the area and take stock of the encroachments a month ago.

A meeting too was conducted with the claimants to the land, which included a real estate company, and the complainants, at the HYDRAA office.

During the meeting, the complainants produced evidence to their claim that due to construction of bridge near the Hitech City, the surplus channel between Thammidikunta and Edulakunta was closed, and the dried up lake was filled with soil and encroached, a statement from HYDRAA informed.

As the lake straddled the borders of Khanamet and Kukatpally, the encroachment went unnoticed, the complainants said.

On Thursday, a comprehensive survey was conducted by the Survey of India based on its toposheets, and the lake’s presence along with its full tank level and water spread area was identified, the note said.

Officials from HYDRAA, Irrigation, Revenue, GHMC and HMDA too participated in the survey.
