Electricity usage in summer in Kerala likely to break last year’s records, says Electricity Minister

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is anticipating record electricity usage this summer season in the State, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty said on Friday.

Kerala had recorded its highest daily consumption of 115.94 million units (mu) on May 3 last year. The highest peak demand of 5,797 megawatt (MW) was recorded on May 2 last year. The KSEB is anticipating higher consumption levels this summer season, Mr. Krishnankutty said, inaugurating online a new building for the Ambalappuzha electrical section and subdivision offices.

At present, the daily consumption is over 95 mu. This is expected to cross 100 mu in March, he said.

In addition to the power ‘banking’ arrangements with utilities in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, the KSEB is also trying for similar arrangements with utilities in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, he said.

Under banking arrangements, the utilities in north Indian States will supply power to Kerala during March, April, and May. The KSEB will return the supply during the monsoon months in Kerala later in the year.

Mr. Krishnankutty also urged the KSEB to ensure that power supply does not get disrupted frequently on account of essential maintenance and repairs on power supply infrastructure.
