Former IAS officer M. Prasada Rao

Former IAS officer and urban governance expert M. Prasada Rao (84) passed away at his residence in Mehdipatnam on Wednesday. Having joined the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh’s Municipal Administration department in 1964, Mr. Rao was promoted to the rank of IAS officer in 1984. He was renowned for his expertise in urban planning and development in Andhra Pradesh.
During his tenure, M. Prasada Rao served as Commissioner of various municipalities and Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Warehousing Corporation and Andhra Pradesh State Trading Corporation. He retired as Director of Municipal Administration in 2001 but continued to contribute to urban governance due to his expertise.
Notably, M. Prasada Rao worked as Professor and HUDCO Chair at MCR HRD Institute, External Expert at EPTRI, Lead Consultant SPIU in the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department, and Urban Governance Expert for the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) until 2019.
M. Prasada Rao is remembered for introducing the citizen charter concept in the State, now widely adopted. He is survived by a son and two daughters. Dr. M.V. Rao, a senior physician at Yashoda Hospitals, is his son-in-law.
