JNU V-C calls for increase in investment for education

Spread the News

Emphasising the need for increased State funding in education sector, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit has called for a marked expansion in investment for education in India.

Delivering the commencement address at Amogha 2024, the graduation ceremony of Fatima Mata National College (Autonomous) here, Ms. Pandit observed that India currently allocated a relatively small portion of its GDP to education compared to other leading countries. She pointed out examples like China and South Korea, which invested approximately one-sixth of their GDP in the sector, demonstrating their strong commitment.

Replying to a student’s query, she said that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 alone could not tackle India’s unemployment crisis, highlighting the need for enhanced industrial development and entrepreneurial initiatives.

College manager Father Abhilash Gregory presided over the function while Sujith Vijayan Pillai, MLA, an alumnus of the college; Principal Cynthia Catherine Michael; Controller of Examinations Christy Clement; Linette J. Morris, Principal of Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; and convener Stancilaus S. also spoke on the occasion.

Graduation certificates were awarded to 513 undergraduate and 142 postgraduate students at the event.
