“Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and the ovaries contain all the eggs. Therefore, it signifies the women’s health pregnancy window is shorter than that of men, who can even father a child at a later age,” she told indianexpress.com. However, in the 40s age group, fertility experts don’t completely rule out the chances of conceiving.
But Dr Nair added that they urge the woman to take notice of the fact that during each ovulatory cycle, the pregnancy rate dips to 5 percent between 40 and 44, whereas beyond 45 it gets reduced to 1 percent.
What to keep in mind when planning to get pregnant?
Dr Ambavarapu Divya Reddy, Fertility Specialist, Nova IVF Fertility, LB Nagar, Hyderabad, shared some factors to keep in mind when preparing for pregnancy. According to her, a health check-up with a gynecologist is important to know reproductive health. “If any preexisting medical conditions like hypertension, diabetes, thyroid diseases need to be taken care of,” she said, adding that screening of sexually transmitted diseases of both partners is also important. Any family history of infertility or any genetic disorders also needs to be evaluated.
Along with that, lifestyle issues need to be carefully checked. “If there is obesity, regular exercise is important to reduce weight; exercise is important with or without obesity,” said Dr Reddy.

Habits like smoking or using tobacco products, alcohol, and sleeping late at night, and stressful situations need to be avoided as much as possible. She also encouraged a balanced diet rich in folic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, along with at least eight to nine hours of sleep.
