Cashing in on the growing popularity of global wellness tourism, the Tourism department in association with Health department will hold a wellness Ayurveda conclave in the State, Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas told the Assembly on Thursday. Replying to a question during the zero hour in the Assembly, the Minister said the popularity of wellness tourism had increased manifold in the post-pandemic period.

“Kerala, being the cradle of Ayurveda, has huge potential in the sector, and the scheduled conclave is aimed at attracting global wellness tourists to the State. The brainstorming session in the conclave will bring together tour operators and other stakeholders in the sector,” said the Minister.

Another focus area is MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) tourism. Kerala is fast becoming a popular destination for MICE tourism. The Tourism department will hold a MICE tourism conclave in association with the tourism industry in Kochi this year. Kerala Travel Mart will take the lead in organising the event, the Minister said.

CRZ exemptions

He also expressed disappointment at the controversies related to the water sports associated with beach tourism. The controversies would only help other-State players who had vested interests. The State would also try to get exemptions in the Coastal Regulation Zone norms to ensure the growth of beach tourism. The department would promote adventure and water sports in order to attract more tourists to Kerala, the Minister added.
