The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Saturday imposed a fine on the Regional Telecom Training Centre (RTTC), a Central government office, for burning trash in the open.

This followed a complaint by the nearby residents who furnished proof by way of video and photographs of the RTTC staff burning dry weeds and overgrown vegetation on its campus at T.K. Layout in the city.

On receiving information about the burning, the MCC staff rushed to the spot and confronted the authorities and directed them to douse the fire. The RTTC was penalized Rs. 500 for burning of dry waste and plastic and an additional Rs. 500 for littering.

The MCC has warned the public that it would go heavy on imposing fines for littering and burning trash in public and crackdown on such practices so that it will act as a deterrent to others.

Sources said the MCC receives around five such complaints from the public daily but can act only when adequate proof is provided by way of photos or videos.

MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif recently appealed to the public that they should cooperate with the local authorities in keeping the city clean and take pride in their city. This came in the backdrop of the impending Swachh Survekshan which is under way and will determine Mysuru’s overall ranking among cleanest cities.

The Commissioner had expressed his dismay over the 2023 ranking when Mysuru was in the 27th overall position and said that all efforts would be made to break into the top league this year. Keeping the city clean, identification and elimination of black spots, and waste segregation at source have been taken up along with penalising those who litter the city.
