The Nadakkavu police on Friday traced a couple from Elathur who had gone missing from Kozhikode on January 7 after being served a notice by the Crime Branch (CB) in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Mohammed Attoor (Mami) missing case. Rajith Kumar and his wife Thushara were taken into custody from Guruvayur.
The suspicious disappearance of Rajith Kumar and Thushara came to light when a family member filed a complaint with the Nadakkavu police on Thursday (January 9).
Rajith Kumar had been working as Mohammed’s driver for around 20 years. According to the police, the couple’s suspicious disappearance was revealed when the CB squad was about to question them again.
Police sources said CCTV footage showed the couple walking near the KSRTC bus stand in Kozhikode. They reportedly stayed at a nearby lodge and vacated it without informing the staff, they added.
It was on August 21 that Mohammed, a prominent businessman, allegedly went missing from Arayidathupalam in Kozhikode. The CB began investigating the case after the High Court dismissed his family members’ plea for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In the initial phase of the probe, the police reportedly gathered details from around 500 houses in the Thalakkulathur area, where Mr. Mohammed had a residence. They also collected information about people who had met him at other locations, including Vellimadukunnu and Balussery.
A special squad of the CB also re-recorded the statements of people previously questioned by the police based on call detail records. The squad focused on Rajith Kumar for further interrogation following inputs from various sources.
