Munnar govt. college empowers students to earn while they learn

The Government College in Munnar has unveiled an innovative programme that combines adventure sports with income-generating opportunities for students. The Department of Physical Education has introduced the “Earn While You Learn” project, which is designed to empower students to earn an income while pursuing their studies.

Dr. Aju T.G., Assistant Professor of Physical Education, said that the initiative aligns with the core concept of students monetising their skills in adventure sports alongside academic learning. “Nearly 200 students study at our college, most of them from families of plantation workers. Given Munnar’s global reputation as a tourism hotspot, we aim to train students in tourism-related skills, opening doors to both income and opportunities while enabling them to fund their education,” said Dr. Aju.

The project provides hands-on training in adventure sports such as trekking, paragliding, mountain biking, and rock climbing. It also emphasises safety protocols, customer service, and tourism management, equipping students to enhance the adventure tourism experience in Munnar. Certificates will be awarded to students upon completion of the training.

In the first phase, groups of 15 boys and1 15 girls will undergo training following a selection process involving tests and interviews. Officials revealed that the concept originated from Idukki District Collector V. Vigneshwari, who previously served as Director of the State Higher Education department.

“The programme not only equips students with practical skills but also boosts Munnar’s local tourism industry,” noted Dr. Aju. He added that the project breathes new life into the college, which suffered severe damage during the devastating floods of August 2018.

Workshop

The Idukki district administration is backing the project’s implementation with a two-day workshop scheduled on December 9 and 10 at the college to discuss the project’s rollout. District Collector V. Vigneshwari will inaugurate the event, which will see participation from the District Tourism Promotion Council, Forest department, and experts in adventure sports.

The Kerala Collegiate Education Department has allocated ₹4 lakh to support the training programme.
