The Namakkal District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) on Tuesday (December 3, 2024) directed a Chennai-based coaching centre to pay ₹38,000 as compensation to a student.
P. Dinesh, 24, a resident of Puthur Malaiyampatti near Rasipuram in Namakkal district, joined a short-term computer course at a private coaching centre in Chennai in June 2023 after paying a fee of ₹26,000. The classes, however, only went on for two weeks; due to a shortage of teachers, they were not conducted properly. As new teachers were not appointed for several weeks, Mr. Dinesh joined another coaching institute. When he demanded that the coaching centre repay the money he paid, it refused.
As a result, he filed a case at the Namakkal DCDRC in May 2024. After an investigation, the DCDRC Commissioner V. Ramaraj on Tuesday directed the coaching centre to repay the fee of ₹26,000, along with a compensation of ₹12,000, to the student within a month.
