North Karnataka Sleep Centre, a first-of-its-kind in North Karnataka, which celebrated World Sleep Day on Friday with a walkathon flagged off by Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, plans to hold extensive public awareness programmes in the coming days on sleep deprivation and related health disorders.

Super-speciality doctors Ameet Sattur, Rajendra Dugani, Datta Nadgir, Harish Joshi, Shylendra and Govind Desai, who have jointly established the sleep centre, told presspersons here on Friday that they plan to hold extensive awareness programmes on sleep disorders, beginning with doctors.

Dr. Sattur said that while good sleep boosts immunity, enhanced cognitive function and supported emotional regulation, acute and chronic sleep loss can cause severe consequences.

“One common sleep disorder that many people face is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) which causes interruptions during sleep leading to poor sleep quality and potential health risks, including high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke,” he said.

Dr. Sattur said that what is a matter of concern is that one among three people in India suffers from sleep disorder which in most cases can be addressed through small lifestyle changes.

But there are other cases that require medical intervention and specialist doctors at NKSC will help them in curing sleep disorders.

Dr. Dugani said that sleep deprivation is a lifestyle disease which is a result of disturbance in sleep hygiene.

“There is misconception that snoring is indication of good sleep, which, however, is not true. Studies have proved that snoring is a disease and it has to be treated as it affects the quality of sleep,” he said.

Dr. Nadgir said that at NKSC, specialists will help patients to address the issue after sleep study.

“Sleep study can be conducted at home with the help of instruments or at NKSC where advanced study is done to identify the root cause. Now, advanced handy machines are available to induce good sleep and already, their efficiency has been proven,” he said.

He said that NKSC plans to conduct extensive awareness programmes beginning with doctors and various professionals, including police personnel and engineers working at night for overseas clients, drivers, journalists and others.

Dr. Joshi said that sleep deprivation can result in several severe health issues and it has the potential to affect many organs of the body.

“Lifestyle modifications will help in addressing several health issues, but people with chronic sleep deprivation will have to be treated by doctors,” he said.

Earlier, during the walkathon organised by NKSC, several doctors, para medical staff and others took part highlighting the need for good sleep.
