Over 200 cases pertaining to online money frauds and other cyber crimes booked in Central Zone in 2024

The police in the nine districts of the Central Zone registered 219 cases of online money fraud and other cyber crimes in 2024 and arrested 64 persons involved in these cases.

Thanjavur district topped the zone with 58 cases in respect of the number of online frauds and other cyber crime cases followed by Tiruchi district with 51 cases. The figure for Pudukottai and Karur districts were 25 and 22 respectively.

The bank accounts of fraudsters were frozen and ₹5.02 crore was confiscated from their accounts. The seized amount was handed over to the affected persons as per court direction.

The police had booked 40 cases against those who had posted in the social media platforms messages that were found to be inciting violence and against social harmony. Thirteen persons were arrested in this connection and lodged in jail. 

As many as 3,211 awareness campaigns were conducted regarding cyber crimes and online frauds. Members of the public were asked to lodge complaints in the toll-free number 1930 to report cyber crimes.

Superintendents of Police in Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts have been advised to initiate stern action against those committing cyber crimes and those posting messages inciting violence and against social harmony in social media platforms, a press release from the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, here said.
