Innate talents of children with disabilities can be brought to the fore with understanding and encouragement of parents and teachers, opined Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru P. Shivaraju.

Speaking after inaugurating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities programme organised by the Mysuru district administration and Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens at P. Kalingarao Ganamantapa at Dasara Exhibition Grounds in Mysuru on Tuesday, Mr. Shivaraju pointed out that children with disabilities will prove that they are in no way inferior to normal children. The “children with special needs” were only “differently-abled” he said while emphasising the need for the society to view them with compassion and help bring them to the mainstream.

Observing that persons with special needs were present all over the world, he said the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is maintained to ensure persons with special needs receive better opportunities. “If we give them more opportunities and encouragement, they will come to the mainstream and contribute to the society,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assistant Professor of Kannada at Maharani’s College Nagaraju, who is also a specially-abled person, recalled that the United Nations began celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities every year since the 1990s so that the world can be made aware of the talents, achievements and lives of the persons with special needs. If the purpose is to be served, persons with special needs should forget their shortcomings and join the mainstream by making use of the facilities extended to them by the government.

He pointed out there were several organisations and institutions working for the welfare of persons with special needs while the government has also implemented a number of schemes.

On this occasion, the Braille calendar for 2025, prepared by the Braille Press of the Department of Empowerment of the Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens, was released.

A book titled “Guruve Namana” written by Mr. Nagaraju also released on the occasion.

The Superintendent of Government School for Visually Impaired Children Satish, Superintendent of School for Hearing Impaired Children Uday Shankar, Mysuru Sistrict Women and Child Welfare officer Usha, Head of Chayaganga Educational Institution Raghunath Gowda, Director of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement Ramesh, Head of School for Specially-Abled Children with Hearing Impairment Sridhar, president of Persons with Hearing Impairment Union Kumar and others were also present on the occasion.
