Protection of child rights and creating awareness about the importance of prohibition of child marriages is everyone’s responsibility, member of State Child Rights Commission (SCRC) Shekhargouda Ramatanal said in Dharwad on Sunday.
He appealed to citizens to do their bit in increasing awareness about provisions of the POCSO Act and other pro-child legislation.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop for district officials organised jointly by the Directorate of Child Protection, the district administration, the District Legal Services Authority and the Women and Child Development Department at the Zilla Panchayat Hall.
He said that the workshop covered the Juvenile Justice Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and various other laws related to children.
Mr. Ramatnal said that officials from various departments, including Panchayat Development Officers and Labour officials, should collaborate with the Education Department to protect children’s rights.
DLSA member-secretary Parashuram Doddamani spoke of the need for increased awareness about children’s laws in all educational institutions.
Women and Child Development Deputy Director H.H. Kukanur and others were present.
