Muslims in Kerala are set to start Ramzan fasting from Sunday (March 2, 2025) if the new moon is sighted after sunset on Saturday (March 1). Most Islamic organisations are hopeful that the new moon might be sighted on Saturday evening, the 29th day of the Islamic month of Shaban.
Major Kazis such as Syed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari, Syed Nasar Hayy Shihab Thangal, and Syed Mohammed Koya Thangal Jamalullaili have asked the people to report the sighting of the new moon on Saturday evening.
However, the Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) Markazudahwa, a small section within the Mujahid group, will start fasting from Saturday. Markazudahwa leaders had already confirmed that Ramzan would begin on Saturday.
During Ramzan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining not only from food and drink but from worldly pleasures. This spiritual practice allows them to focus on their faith, draw closer to Allah and commemorate the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammed.
Ramzan is a time for spiritual reflection and prayer, reading the Quran, doing good deeds, connecting with the community and helping those in need. It is a period of devotion, self-reflection, and spiritual growth for Muslims around the world.
