Residents of a few localities in Ranebennur of Haveri district have said that employees of microfinance companies are harassing them seeking repayment of loans availed of by them. The residents have said that their women are being stalked by employees of these companies seeking repayment installments.

According to residents of Anjaneya Extension, Haralayya Nagar, Goulera Oni and a few other localities of Ranebennur, those who have availed of loans from microfinance companies are being tortured by the employees of such companies.

Some of the residents have videographed such harassment being meted out by the staff of microfinance companies. They have said that despite the Deputy Commissioner of Haveri giving the companies a direction not to harass loanees, the residents are being tortured through different methods.

They have said that those who have been unable to pay installments in time are being disgraced in public by the staff of such companies. At times, the employees who arrive to collect money refuse to leave their house till the installment is paid. Even a single day’s delay results in them being disgraced in public or harassed, they have said.

In a meeting a couple of weeks ago, Deputy Commissioner of Haveri Vijay Mahanthesh Danammanavar organised a meeting with officials of microfinance institutions and warned them against harassing loanees.

During the meeting, the officials clarified that they are taking steps to recover loans as per the prescribed RBI guidelines.
