A delegation led by Red Gram Growers Association from Kalaburagi district will meet Union Agriculture Minister Shivaraj Shivraj Chouhan to urge him to fix exclusively a minimum support price (MSP) for tur dal that has the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and produced in the district.
Association president Basavaraj Ingin, addressing presspersons here on Thursday, said that the delegation of farmers leaders and members of the association will meet Mr. Chouhan in Delhi by the next week (tentatively, February 9 or 10) and convey the importance of GI tag tur dal falling in Class-31 which is produced on nearly 7.5 lakh hectares of land in the district.
In July 2024, the Geographical Indication Registry issued a certificate authorizing the use of GI tag tur dal in favour of 14 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) of the district.
These FPOs with the help of Karnataka State Pulses Development Board can market superior quality red gram at a good price and even export it.
Mr. Ingin said that the delegation will also urge Mr. Chouhan to instruct the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) to re-consider MSP to classify between the general tur dal and that of GI tag tur dal and fix at least 25% more than the general tur price and accord a separate number in list of MSP for the kharif crop.
