Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, leading a delegation of parliamentarians from Kerala, called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday to seek the Centre’s support for the landslide-affected people of Wayanad.

Ms. Vadra said the Centre should rise above partisan politics in providing relief and pointed out that the landslide-affected people in Wayanad had no support system left.

The delegation included K.C. Venugopal and Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress, John Britas of the CPI(M), E.T. Mohammed Basheer of the Indian Union Muslim League, and other MPs.

Ms. Vadra said people had a lot of hope after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the area and if the Centre could not step up to meet the expectations of the victims, it would send a very bad message to the entire country.

“We apprised him of the situation there and told him how people have been devastated because the river’s entire course has changed and everything was washed away,” she told reporters after meeting Mr. Shah, who, she said, gave them a patient hearing.

The Congress MP said the Home Minister told the delegation that he would provide by Thursday (December 5, 2024) evening the details of what was promised and what had been given in relief.

“Families, houses, businesses, schools, everything has been washed away. In such a situation, if the Central government does not do anything then what can we do? So we appealed to him that setting aside politics, people there should be helped from a humanitarian point of view,” she said.

Ms. Vadra said she told Mr. Shah that “when she met the victims there was an expectation among them that the PM would do something but till now no help has been extended which is saddening”.

Ms. Vadra said a separate representation had been given to the Prime Minister to set aside politics and extend help to people as much as possible.

“On behalf of all MPs from Kerala, it was an appeal to the government that they should consider this very seriously and be more forthcoming with the relief so that these people can rebuild their lives,” she added.

The disaster, which struck Wayanad on July 30, devastated large parts of three villages — Punchirimattam, Chooralmala, and Mundakkai. As per official records, 231 people were killed.
