Police have registered a case against three officials of an aluminium products manufacturing factory in Nagpur following the death of five workers in a blast last week. A preliminary probe has revealed serious safety lapses at the plant, officials said on Monday.

The incident occurred on April 11 at MMP Aluminium Industries located in the Umred MIDC area of Nagpur district. The five deceased workers, all aged between 20 and 25, were residents of the district.

Two other workers sustained nearly 80% burn injuries and are in critical condition. They were moved from the Government Medical College and Hospital to a private hospital on Saturday for better treatment, according to an official.

A report by the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) found that the factory had failed to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to its workers, thereby exposing them to high risk. Additionally, two recently recruited workers had been assigned tasks without any safety training, officials at Umred police station said, quoting the report.

Based on these findings, police on Sunday registered a case against two managers and the factory’s safety incharge under sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), and 125(B) (endangering life or personal safety of others due to negligence or recklessness) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

No arrests have been made so far. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, police added.
