Demanding regularisation of services of Group D hostel workers and abolition of contract system, the State committee of the Karnataka Rajya Samyukta Vasatinilaya Karmikara Sangha affiliated to All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) will stage a State-level protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on April 17.

State president of the sangha K. Somashekar Yadgiri, addressing presspersons here on Thursday, said that contractors are paying less than the fixed amount of honorarium for hostel workers. Employers have even failed to pay provident fund (PF) amount and employees state insurance (ESI).

The government has to find a permanent solution by abolishing contract system and should directly deposit honorarium of the employees into their bank account every month, he added.

Mr. Yadgiri said that more than 12,000 people have been working in hostels coming under Backward Classes and Minorities Social Welfare Department and Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) in the State for more than two decades and they are being paid anywhere between ₹12,000 and ₹15,000 per month. The sangha demands that the government pay them minimum wages of ₹35,950.

Their demands also include extending social security and pension for hostel workers, appointing night security guards for pre-matriculation and post-matriculation hostels established by the Backward Classes Welfare Department.
